Mini Saint Paulin
Main Product
Ingredients
- 2 slices country-style bread
- 1 Mini Saint Paulin cheese (about 40g), sliced
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 2 slices ham (optional)
Directions
- Prepare the ingredients
Start by gathering all your ingredients to ensure a smooth cooking process. Slice the Mini Saint Paulin cheese into thin, even slices to guarantee it melts evenly during grilling. If you’re using ham, choose a high-quality cooked ham and slice it thinly. Set everything aside on a clean prep surface.
- Assemble the sandwich
Take two slices of country-style bread or any rustic loaf of your choice. Place one slice flat on a board. Begin layering the slices of Mini Saint Paulin cheese generously across the bread, ensuring the edges are covered so the melted cheese reaches all corners. If using ham, place two slices evenly on top of the cheese. Gently place the second slice of bread on top to form your sandwich.
- Butter the outer sides
Take room-temperature unsalted butter and spread a thin but even layer on the outside-facing sides of the bread — this is key to achieving a golden, crispy crust. Make sure the butter covers from edge to edge. For extra flavor, you can mix the butter with a pinch of garlic powder or herbs like thyme before spreading.
- Heat the pan
Preheat a non-stick skillet or a grill pan over medium heat. Let it warm up for about a minute. A medium heat is important — too hot and the bread may burn before the cheese has time to melt; too low and it won’t crisp up nicely.
- Grill the sandwich
Carefully place the sandwich in the heated pan. Using a spatula, press down lightly to encourage even browning and cheese melting. Grill the first side for about 3 to 4 minutes, checking occasionally until it turns a deep golden brown. Flip the sandwich gently, then grill the second side for another 3–4 minutes. The cheese should be fully melted and the bread beautifully crisp.
- Serve hot
Once both sides are golden and the inside is melted and gooey, remove the sandwich from the pan. Let it sit for 1 minute before slicing — this prevents the cheese from spilling out immediately. Cut diagonally for a classic presentation and serve with a light salad, a small bowl of tomato soup, or enjoy on its own as a quick and satisfying comfort meal.
